Centenarians tell 500+ years of stories

Five Melbourne centenarians joined in Bolton Clarke’s first Victorian Centenarian Club celebration on 12 October, coinciding with the Victorian Seniors Festival. Aged Care Resident Found Dead With Blanket Over Head.

Stella Hamilton, 72, spent the last 6 months of her life as a resident on the dementia wing at an aged care facility in Malanda, south-west of Cairns. She was found deceased in her room on the 31st of July, 2016, but was unconscious and expected to pass away in the days leading up to the discovery of her body. While this is obviously a distressing time for a loved one, this is a fairly inconspicuous and everyday occurrence within...

Contemporary spiritual support essential in aged care

Meaningful Ageing Australia is launching several initiatives this week to boost understanding about the importance of spiritual care for people’s quality of life as they age. Cameras in aged care: “Would you want your mother and father to be filmed in their bedroom?”

Mounting pressure to instal cameras in aged care facilities Over the last few months, cases of abuse in aged care facilities have come to light only because concerned staff or family have secretly...

All Aboard? How the Aged Care Housing Crisis is Anything But Smooth Sailing

Forget Captain Columbus and James Cook, the new band of explorers to sail the high seas could be seniors and low-income earners. With record costs for residential aged care being reached around the globe, experts predict a looming aged care housing affordability crisis. Additional to seniors, low-income, immigrants and the homeless persons are all facing the fear, vulnerability and health consequences that housing unaffordability is bringing. The issue is a significant one. How can those who are most vulnerable in...

Coping With the Guilt: Am I Doing Enough for my Elderly Parents?

Many of those caring for elderly parents experience profound feelings of guilt. Already leading busy lives of their own, often juggling career and children, many families struggle with the added responsibility of caring for an elderly loved one. The term ‘sandwich generation’ was coined in the early 1980s to describe carers, mainly women, who were caught between caring for children and looking after elderly parents. Today the pressure is often compounded because more women, and indeed men, are also juggling...
