What is Dementia?

This is Part 2 of The University of Queensland Brain Institute’s Brain Series on HelloCare Dementia is not a single disease, but an umbrella term describing a collection of symptoms from a range of conditions that cause parts of the brain to deteriorate progressively. Dementia affects functions such as memory, perception, behaviour, language, and personality. There are more than 50 conditions known to cause the symptoms of dementia. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common, accounting for about 60-70% of cases. Other common...

Neglected Issue: Exercise for Individuals Living with Dementia in Residential Aged Care Facilities

Most health professionals working in residential aged care facilities (RACFs) will agree that physiotherapy and exercise for individuals living with dementia is a neglected area, even though there is evidence that demonstrates numerous benefits. A systematic review found studies demonstrated significant improvements in cognition, agitation, mood, mobility and functional ability for individuals living with dementia in RACFs when they participated in exercise. Recent Australian studies have also demonstrated the feasibility of physiotherapy and exercise for individuals living with dementia in...

Why We Need to Talk About Dementia

This is Part 1 of The University of Queensland Brain Institute’s Brain Series on HelloCare Dementia is a complex health problem, both because of the sheer number of underlying conditions that can cause it (more than 50) and because of its direct and indirect impact on people and the health system. We currently have no cure for any form of dementia. With an ageing population, people are living longer and the social and economic costs continue to rise. More than 400...

Wandering: What People with Dementia are Really Trying to Tell You

“Wandering” is a controversial word when it comes to dementia. Why so? It’s common for health professionals and family carers to refer to “wandering” as a symptom of their condition but some dementia advocates, as well as people living with dementia,  do not like the term. And perhaps rightly so. They may even go as far as to encourage people to not call such behaviour “wandering”. Rather an unmet need of the person living with dementia. So what actually is...

Just One Hour of Social Interaction Can Help People with Dementia, says Research

Social isolation can lead to negative health effects - this is something that many studies and researches have stated in the past. The negative effects are especially seen in people living with dementia, who are more likely to exhibit agitation and restlessness than people who do have some social interactions. It has even been suggested that being socially isolated can speed up the cognitive decline and make the progression of dementia more rapid. The common cycle we often see with...

Blood Test For Dementia: New Test Can Detect Alzheimer’s Decades Before Symptoms Appear

A simple blood test may hold the key to an early dementia diagnosis, according to new research pioneered by Australian and Japanese scientists. In a world first, the test is expected to make an accurate diagnosis up to 30 years before symptoms appear. Published in the journal Nature, the research was 90 per cent accurate when trialled on healthy people, those with memory loss and people living with Alzheimer's disease. The test works by detecting a specific protein in a...
